Convention and events in memory of Domitilla and Daniel
Associazione Domitilla Rota Hyams (ADRH) was founded in 2012 in Italy. The Association is named after the late founder of LITTLE EDEN Society, Domitilla Rota, who was Italian.
Domitilla was born and raised in a small village called Albenza in the province of Bergamo in Italy. Although there was a lot of suffering in her younger days, owing to the War, she believed that it was all part of a Divine plan which brought LITTLE EDEN into being ... the same Divine Providence that has guided, protected and sustained, for over 48 years, this special place of love for children and adults with profound intellectual disability. It was the War that brought Danny Hyams into her life. A South African escaped prisoner of war, he was sheltered by the Rota family. After the war, he returned to Johannesburg, saved enough money to begin married life, and went back to Italy in 1947 to claim Domitilla as his bride. The couple had six children - most of whom have served LITTLE EDEN themselves. Daughter Lucy Slaviero is the current CEO, while Mary Hyams is Manager, Care Services and Elizabeth Toldo is Head of Nursing. On the occasion of the Associazione Domitilla Rota Hyams opening ceremony, the 21st January 2012 a conference was held in the Civic Room of the Municipality of Almenno San Bartolomeo (Bergamo). Among the guests was the co-founder of LITTLE EDEN Society and the husband of the late Domitilla, Danny George Hyams, honorary President and Members of the Association Domitilla Rota Hyams; his daughters Lucy Mary Hyams (CEO of Little Eden Society) and Agnes Hyams; the emeritus Archbishop of Pretoria George Francis Daniel; Public Relations Officer of LITTLE EDEN, Nichollette Muthige, and the psychiatrist Jason Rory Mannix, who is one of the grandchildren of the founders. Since then Associazione Domitilla Rota Hyams organized numerous initiatives to support LITTLE EDEN. Recently, on 7th February 2016 representatives from LITTLE EDEN and the Hyams family were invited to the town of Almenno San Bartolomeo (Bergamo) in Italy to take part in a series of events to honor Domitilla and Danny Hyams (Founders of LITTLE EDEN Society). In Albenza, a hamlet of Almenno San Bartolomeo, the guests attended the unveiling of the sign board of the birth place of Domitilla Rota and the blessing of the new road, called Domitilla Rota, which takes to the little church that was decorated with an effigy of the late fellow countrywoman (see photo on the right). During the same day the late husband of Domitilla, Daniel George Hyams, was honored with the recognition and conferment posthumously “"Honorary Citizenship”, to recognize him for the role he played as a lifelong support to Domitilla. Moreover, the Association Domitilla Rota Hyams had the pleasure to name the offices of the Municipality of Almenno San Bartolomeo as “House of Domitilla and Daniel Hyams”.
